Gina Cross - prints and paintings
Gina Cross is a multi-disciplinary artist and curator whose work investigates the relationships between space, form, colour and light.
Gina’s current work is focused on working with paper and metal to create sculptural works alongside using photography as a core part of her practice to document the ephemeral nature of form and the interaction of light and colour. The results are a mixture of photographic prints and physical artworks on paper and metal.
Gina states that ‘my work is inspired and influenced by many factors including the sculptural qualities of some haute couture, architecture, the play of light and shadow. All of my work is fundamentally concerned with the relationship of space, colour, light and form.’
Since 2022 Gina has been working on reclaimed copper plate, photo etching the plates with textures and shapes that are derived from her own photographs and manipulations. The metal undergoes chemical processes to transfer the imagery on to the plate, and Gina embraces the imperfections that happen in this process that are adding themselves to the existing history engraved in the metal.
Colour is applied through a number of processes, including mono printing, screen printing stencilled shapes and enamel spray paint, working intuitively and not to a plan.
The reflective surface acts as the spacial element in the compositions, helping the applied colours shine but also they reflect the light and colour of their surroundings, and in that sense they come alive.
These works were recently shown at the London Original Print Fair 2024 and are currently created for commissions and gallery shows.
